Statement from Communities for Affordable Power on SCC Staff Recommendation to Reject Dominion–NextEra Takeover:

“Today’s recommendation from the State Corporation Commission (SCC) Staff confirms what Virginians have been saying all along. NextEra’s proposed $67 billion takeover of Dominion Energy is a bad deal for Virginia families and businesses.

“After reviewing the proposed merger, SCC Staff concluded that the companies have failed to demonstrate that the deal would protect Virginia communities and ensure reliable service at just and reasonable rates. Staff also raised serious concerns about the additional financial risks the takeover would introduce and whether Dominion would have the resources it needs to reliably serve Virginians after the takeover.

“We applaud SCC Staff for putting the interests of Virginia communities first. This takeover would create the nation’s largest electric utility monopoly, giving a Florida-based company control over Virginia’s power and putting families and businesses at risk of higher bills. The Commission should follow its Staff’s recommendation and reject this takeover. Virginians deserve affordable, reliable electricity, not a bigger monopoly that could leave them paying more.”
